Hey! First post here.
How do you find new music after switching away from streaming services like Spotify?
I’m looking to get a modded Ipod classic to transition away from music streaming. But since I’ve been using Spotify all my life, I haven’t really developed the skill of finding new music.
Thanks for your advice!
That’s a good question to be honest. I’ve never developed a penchant for Spotify surprisingly. Usually I find music by looking up genres that interest me and seeing what YouTube brings me. Sometimes I use SoundHound if I hear something in the wild.
I did find a band recently because someone was wearing a shirt that intrigued me lol.
I ask for reccomindation my internet friends, or don't ask and they just reccomend stuff to me.
I'm in a metal fans discord server, in wich i ask for reccomendations.
I have a RYM account and rate some stuff, there is auto reccomendations, wich altho could be useful i rarely use.
Mainly i use charts and select genres i want and just go throug them and pick albums that i like for some reasons, be it a cool cover or it has genre or multiple genres that i'm insterested in. Also i sometimes go through my friends ratings to see albums they highly rated, and see if there is any that i'd like to check. (The friends are from the same discord server)
Also i have last.fm wich has reccomendations but i don't use them now, nor did i use them much in the past but that could be an option, if you are fine with sharing your listening data there.

I don't particularly tend to look for new music actively so hopefully my suggestions will help, but ultimately I'm not sure. I'll chip in what I can anyway:
If your friend sends you some meme or video or... anything really, and a particular piece of music catches your fancy, look to see if it's listed in the video or description or wherever's appropriate. If not, you can search up the lyrics or use software meant for finding songs with either difficult to decipher or even absent lyrics (assuming you're comfortable with using those things). This also applies for any content you may stumble upon yourself. It should be easier in the case of films, since they often list the songs used and the composer/artist(s) in the credits, and they'll usually appear in the soundtrack of the film itself.
I second this idea, but I would also recommend a subreddit called "r/NameThatSong", where they have a bot called "Recognize Song" that can detect audio from a video, and usually give you a link to that song, often on youtube or wherever it can find it. Though, I understand if reddit isnt your cup of tea, or if you dont have an account, etc.
