Dumbphone and Smart Watch?

Post by ambiarock »

I like the idea of rolling around with a dumbphone but as someone with ADHD I like some of the functionality that smartphones and smart watches offer like making my wrist buzz whenever a timer goes off and tapping me on the wrist for reminders. I'd like some ideas of potential ways of making a dumbphone work so I can entertain them at some point. My first thought is running a Mac Mini as I have an apple watch.

First, welcome to the forum!!

I left this comment on the video regarding an iPod alarm, however, I'd like to actually consider the smart watch route, it's an interesting point.

If a dumb phone is running Android, in theory, you could put any app on it (it might not work well, but it'd be interesting to explore!) It might be possible to get, say, a Pebble smartwatch to work alongside a dumb phone, but I'd be very curious what other people have in mind.

Are Pebbles still worth it today?

I’m pretty sure the official servers are down, but as always, the internet finds a way  Looks like there’s a community dedicated to keeping them alive: https://rebble.io/

I've never thought about the apple watch + dumbphone combo, but that makes SO much sense! watches are a lot less addictive I think and I imagine the benefit of having something on your wrist must be immense for ADHD!
Since my dumbphone runs android, I'll definitely look into the pebble watches!

Something I've been looking into as well is SensorWatch, for the tinkerers out there...
It's a motherboard switch for casio watches (or at least for some casio models) that gives you the option to customize your watch faces in a bunch of ways, and you can even make your own (although I think some basic python is needed for that).
I don't quite get the different restrictions on the different models/firmware versions yet but it seems like there's the option for a pedometer, heart beat tracker and temperature sensor on some of them, which are the tools I'd mainly want in a smart watch. It also has the buzzing feature in a newer version it seems, which @ambiarock mentioned as something they'd need.

I gave my old apple watch to my partner a while ago, since he's into bodybuilding and benefits way more than me from the exercise helpers it provides, but have been missing the basic tracking functionality and timers. I would love something similar back, but also love my old, beat up casio very dearly (lmao)

Not completely relevant to the topic, but, I love the communities that spring up around derelict technology. Like the spotify car thing community, and how they've managed to use it as a miniature monitor for your PC and etc.

Relevant edit: Some CASIO watched and other watches, etc have vibration functionality. Maybe that's relevant for you! Though, as a g-shock enjoyer, it can be a hassle to deal with the menus and etc. Some casio watches (one i gifted to a friend) has a heart rate monitor, and is like a miniature, barebones fitness tracker that can track very basic activities, though, for some reason it always beeped whenever your heartrate went over a certain limit. you can PROBABLY turn that off but I never cared to, nor looked into it.

I've seen ads for this product on instagram plenty, and while I don't know if this is THE watch i've been seeing, i do know that there's a company, or multiple companies trying to make a sustainable smart watch? I did a quick google search and found UNA, @ https://www.unawatch.com/ , and this seems to be what i remember seeing on the ads. I'm a little skeptical, though, I will never outright say that a company building something that's meant to be taken apart and easily replaced is a bad thing, I'm just skeptical that it will be privacy friendly. I just LOVE that theres more companies out there dedicating themselves/some of their products to being repairable and/or upgradeable. Framework laptop user here haha.
